- <p> DIED. Bill Simpson, 37, the last black resident of Vidor, Texas;
- shot by a black mugger; in Beaumont, Texas. Simpson moved to
- Vidor earlier this year as one of a handful of blacks who came
- as the result of court-ordered integration of the East Texas
- town's public housing projects. Despite his efforts to assimilate
- quietly, Simpson was subjected for months to Ku Klux Klan threats
- and racial epithets shouted from passing cars. Unable to endure
- the unremittingly hostile atmosphere any longer, Simpson decided
- to leave, as all of his fellow blacks already had. He headed
- last week for what he thought would be a friendlier community
- in nearby Beaumont. Within hours of his arrival, Simpson was
- gunned down by a gang member.
