  15. <p>     DIED. Bill Simpson, 37, the last black resident of Vidor, Texas;
  16. shot by a black mugger; in Beaumont, Texas. Simpson moved to
  17. Vidor earlier this year as one of a handful of blacks who came
  18. as the result of court-ordered integration of the East Texas
  19. town's public housing projects. Despite his efforts to assimilate
  20. quietly, Simpson was subjected for months to Ku Klux Klan threats
  21. and racial epithets shouted from passing cars. Unable to endure
  22. the unremittingly hostile atmosphere any longer, Simpson decided
  23. to leave, as all of his fellow blacks already had. He headed
  24. last week for what he thought would be a friendlier community
  25. in nearby Beaumont. Within hours of his arrival, Simpson was
  26. gunned down by a gang member.
